The VOLNA submarine-launched space-rocket complex is based on the RSM-50 (SS-N-18) SLBM to:
- promptly launch experimental spacecraft to try out new technologies and structures in flight conditions;
- conduct scientific and technological studies under microgravity with the use of a recoverable vehicle;
- launch small spacecraft into near-earth orbits when equipped with an extra booster.
All the launches are performed from the Pacific Ocean water.
